Maybe you are celebrating with your children; maybe with your own mother. This day might be a busy day or a quiet day. Perhaps even bittersweet if you are missing your mother or a child (or children). It does not matter how you celebrate or what you do. MOST wishes all mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day! Thanks to Lisa DiBona, MOST Board member, for this article.

When you have multiples, being a Mom can mean days of exhaustion, as well as days of milestones and excitement that only another mother of multiples can understand. It’s a day of homemade cards and gifts, that you’ll treasure forever and maybe even breakfast in bed, which is priceless, even if it’s only Cheerios.

Mother’s Day is more than just a day to send Mom a card and some flowers. It’s a day to reflect on all that has gone on for the last year. A day to slow down and remember to say thank you for all the little things that your Mom does for you.

Some families have traditions for Mother’s Day. We pack a picnic lunch and head to the park, where Mom gets to watch the kids and Dad gets to run after them. Our picnic basket is filled with sandwiches and drinks as we wait for the ice cream man to arrive. We always invite Grandma and Pop, so Pop can help with the running around. Our secret hope is that the kids will be so tired, that bedtime will come just a little bit earlier and Mom can actually put her feet up for a few minutes to reflect on the day.

Some families have children make their mothers cards or other gifts. What does your family do?

Lay the tissues flat, take the pipe cleaner and gather the tissues in the middle, twist the pipe cleaner round the tissues and then open up the tissues on each side. You have a beautiful flower that will last forever. Looks really nice if you use colored tissues and spray a little of Mom’s favorite perfume on the ‘flowers’.
National Women’s Health Week

May 13-19th is National Women’s Health Week. The theme for 2012 is “It’s Your Time” and encourages women to make their health a top priority. Your health is important! The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health recommends women should visit a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings. Do you know what tests and screenings are recommended for a woman of your age? Be a positive role model by being active, eating healthy, getting enough sleep (or at least try to), not smoking, and always wearing a seat belt and bicycle helmet.

Maureen Boyle shares her most unusual Mother’s Day gift. And she asked for this gift! What is the most unusual gift you requested or received for Mother’s Day?

See related poll: What is best about Mother’s Day?

For me the most unusual Mother’s Day gift I requested (and thankfully received) was for all of my children (5 teenagers) and my husband to go to the dermatologist and have a full body check. Aside from May being the month of MOM it is also skin cancer awareness month. This request might seem really crazy to some and somewhat neurotic to others. I can understand that but I have a strong family history of skin cancer. In order for my mind to be put at ease I needed to know that all of my immediate family was, at this moment, free from any suspicious growths. Earlier that year my aunt died from malignant melanoma and my mom has had several occurrences of melanoma and many surgeries over the years. One of my younger sisters was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma during her first pregnancy and another sister diagnosed with the same disease in her late 30’s. I have needed several MOHS surgeries to remove basal cell carcinomas, the most common form of skin cancer, and plastic surgery for the repair. I am very fair skinned and a red head, two strong risk factors for melanoma, and my husband tans quite easily and becomes fairly dark skinned if out in the sun even for a short period of time. He always thought that he would not have a problem because of this. My aunt that died was also fairly dark skinned and tanned easily, much like my husband. So, NO, tanning easily or having fairly dark skin does NOT mean you cannot or will not get skin cancer. Not only did I want to know that my husband and children were free of suspicious growths, I also wanted to be sure that they knew that it was not just their overly protective wife/mother that thought that you were never too young to get skin cancer and how extremely important it is for each of them to take responsibility for their own health and take precautions when out in the sun.

I have to go for full body checks every six months because of my history. I try to go in the fall and spring and when I was there in April I asked my dermatologist if he thought that asking my entire family to get checked would be an overly cautious request (in other words, did he think I was crazy). Quite the contrary- he LOVED the idea and thought it was really important. He was so supportive of the idea that he told me that he would open the office on Mother’s Day not only for my family 6 more patients- not me since I had just had my examination) and any other family that wished to come in and he would spread the word to his other patients.

So that Mother’s Day after going to Mass and having a wonderful breakfast at our local diner, we piled into the Suburban and went to the dermatologist. (It seems weird even to write this.) I had told all of them that this was absolutely the ONLY thing that I wanted that Mother’s Day and that they honestly did not have to get me anything else (okay, I would also have loved a homemade card but if I didn’t get one I would not be upset).

One by one they were called in for their check-ups. Some wanted me to go with them, others did not. The day before I spoke with each of them privately to see if they had any questions or if they had any moles or freckles they had questions about. We wrote down the questions and I held on to them so that they could bring them into the doctor with them. I told the nurse that they had a paper with questions for the doctor and I asked her if she would bring it up just in case the children might forget or were too shy to say something.

Some of my children have a moles, birth marks or freckles so the doctor mapped them and took photos of them so that in the future they could be sure to look closely at them. Both of my daughters ended up having suspicious growths and needed to have them removed. (They turned out to be totally fine.) This was a REAL wake-up call for all of them. Our biggest surprise though was for our youngest son. He had a freckle on the bottom of his foot. A VERY unusual place for a freckle. I could have sworn it was dirt. I laughed at first and suggested that maybe we try to clean the bottom of his foot to see if it would wash off. Nope, it was a freckle alright. They took a photo of it and he would needed to come back to have this followed.

Given our family history, our doctor suggested that my children come back every year for a full body check. He spoke with each of them about proper sun protection year round, talked about the different sunscreens and what to look for AND to wear it year round. He also gave each a chart with photos of what to look for and when to have something checked out. He gave me a few extras and I taped one to the inside of the bathroom mirror in each bathroom so that they would not only see it daily and be reminded to check but if they did have a new mole they would know what to look for.

I cannot begin to tell you what a truly happy this Mother’s Day gift was for me! I know I worry WAY too much but can you blame me? I’m a mother. That is my job.

Wait until I tell you what I did this year. You are REALLY going to think I have gone over the edge. (Or maybe not; maybe you are the same kind of Crazy Mom I am.)

Happy, Happy Mother’s Day to all of our MOMs out there!!

Enjoy your little miracles and PLEASE let me know what the MOST unusual Mother’s Day gift you requested or received?

Jump Right In!

Judy Challoner, mom to Nick, Kevin, & Leigh, shares part of a day with her triplets, one with Asperger’s. Links for web resources and MOST articles are at the end.

At the beginning of the summer school holidays I took the children (GBB triplets), just 8-years-old, to the pool . It was one of those unbelievable 80 degree Sundays, a perfect day for playing in this big wading pool. Sunscreen, water bottles, towels, toy boats – we were set. No one else was there, unbelievable considering the temperature, and my three were in heaven.

After half an hour or so two boys, brothers, came and joined in the water play with Leigh, Nick and Kevin. Things were going well. I could see Kevin talking with these two boys and actually playing a game with them. Other families with younger children arrived and although not crowded, the activity and noise level definitely increased. Then it happened. Out of the blue Kevin began splashing and kicking the two boys and cursing them out. I jumped in the pool and waded toward him.

Unfortunately another mother was closer to the melee and saw what was happening. She reached for Kevin to help stop him before I did. For her efforts she got several quick blows, kicks, and curses – poor lady. I reached Kevin, dragged him away apologizing, “My son is autistic and sometimes blows.” Advocacy in a nutshell. As I got him out of the pool I explained to the other two that we had to go home, and much to their credit Nick and Leigh got out promptly. They were drying off and getting dressed when Kevin slipped out of my grasp (he’s 75 1bs. and was very wet and slippery). In a moment he was back splashing and slapping the two boys. Horrified, I apologized to their Dad – same curt explanation, plunged in after Kevin, dragged him out amid howls and kicks, and tried to calm him down. It was useless.

Just as I had herded him away from the pool area, my arms full of wet towels, swim suits, etc., he was gone again. This time the two boys retaliated, pretty understandably, and splashed and kicked at him. Once more I went wading, this time furious with the whole scene, dragged him out, yelled at my other two to schlep our stuff, and force marched them all to the van. Perfect mothering.

Once there, Kevin remembered the ice-cream treat we were planning on having on the way home. He forgot the caveat of “for good behavior.” And when reminded of this, he began demolishing the van, screaming all kinds of choice things at life in general and me. Driving home with all the windows down (it was hot, remember?), quite a few heads turned, and by now I was sobbing. But there was good news. My husband, Peter, was home – he travels a lot – and he could hold and rock Kevin until he calmed down. This took about an hour, and then Kevin fell asleep for a good five or six hours. (Shutting down like this in response to emotional trauma is not atypical for Kevin, or for other kids on the Autism Disorder Spectrum for that matter.) And best of all, Grandpa just happened to stop by and willingly took Leigh and Nick for that much deserved ice cream. I was still uselessly sobbing.

The next day Kevin could tell me the reason for his meltdown. One of the boys changed the rules of the game and Kevin hadn’t like the new rule. This is classic response by someone with Autism whose motto is “change is evil.” Now on the one hand I was delighted he could verbalize what had happened as he saw it because then we could go on to talk about choices and why fighting wasn’t a good one to make. Better mothering! But on the other hand I despaired for Kevin and our family. Would a simple outing, such as this one, to the Mermaid pool ever be “normal?” Would Kevin forever be at the mercy of his sensory environment and his social-communication deficits? Would Leigh and Nick begin to resent the impact Kevin’s autistic behavior was having on them? And how long will Peter and I feel as if we are walking on eggshells? And under those cracking eggshells is a volcano, ready to erupt seemingly without warning. So much for a diagnosis of mild Asperger’s!

Upon reflection and after several weeks of emailing another mom, whose daughter also has Asperger Syndrome, I now know these issues and feelings are all “normal” for a family with ASD. Collectively we know so much, and reaching out can really diminish the burden and isolation a family with ASD carries and faces each day. Sharing stories like this and discussing ideas and approaches may give us the ongoing courage and humor we need to advocate for all our children.
