The Sisters Grimm: The Fairy-Tale Detectives - Book #1
by Michael Buckley

Peter Ferguson (Illustrator)

I know this book is for grades 4th to 6th grade, but when my daughter went to sleep I just had to read it. It's about two sisters Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, who have lost their parents, literally - they can't find them. They are forced to live in dreadful foster homes, until they are shipped off to their grandmothers house - a person they were told had died long ago. And then the real adventure begins, because their grandmother is a detective in a town where fairies and humans live together. If you remember any of your fairy tales this book will be even more fun to read. The mayor is Prince Charming and Jack from Jack in the Bean Stalk works in a Tall and Big Mans shop, even the 3 Little Pigs show up. If you've never read a single fairy tale, it's still a great read. And the best part is there are already two more volumes in print.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre
by Gail Carson Levine

(recommended for ages 9-12)

Other books by this author that we like are:

  • Ella Enchanted
  • The Princess Tales
  • The Fairy's Mistake

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is about two sisters who are princesses. When Meryl, one of the sisters, falls ill with the Gray Death, it is up to her sister and fellow princess, Addie, to find the cure before it's too late. Princess Addie battles dragons, ogres, gryphons, and many other creatures before she discovers what the cure to bring to her sister is. Will she save her sister and get to the cure in time? Or will her sister be forced to become immortal to save herself?

I really liked this book because it is full of suspense, adventure, and fantasy. If you like books with these things, read The Two Princesses of Bamarre and you'll be happy.
