For the second time in about nine years, 33-year-old Sonia Stevenson has to watch one of her children suffer through the ravages of cancer. Volunteers Build Addition for Quintuplets

Posted December 11, 2007

Volunteer carpenters using donated building supplies are erecting an addition to the home of the Wing quintuplets in Michigan. The addition will include three bedrooms, a full bath, utility room and basement for the family of the nearly two year olds. Since the arrival of the three girls and two boys on Jan. 30, 2006, Rex and Malessa Wing have converted their small living room into a nursery, made an adjoining dining room a magnet for toys and a combined family room and kitchen the only cozy spot for everyone to congregate, eat meals, and relax, as best they can. This setup has created enormous inconveniences at times. When the quintuplets are asleep, the front door is off limits. It's easier to step in and out an oversized, low hanging front window. Using the only bathroom requires planning, as its location, along with bedrooms, is on the opposite side of the quintuplets' sleeping area. Read more about the effort to help the Wing family>>

High Rate of Premature Births in Maine

But health advocates point out that Maine's rate grew 20 percent from 1994 to 2004, compared with 14 percent nationwide. Experts say the precise reason for Maine's increase in premature births is not known, though it may include factors cited nationally, such as the growing prevalence of fertility treatments, which often result in risky, multiple births. Roberts has been frank in admitting her pregnancy resulted from a short-lived relationship. In the last year or so, Roberts lost her job, absorbed thousands in debt and underwent eviction from her apartment. Like many parents, Brett and Jenny Horn had secured tall pieces of furniture to the walls in their home because of the danger they pose and had taken numerous other safety precautions to protect their children. His parents remember him as a boy whose world was one filled with the companionship of his parents, an older brother and his triplet brother and sister. Charlie, the first-born of the triplets, had a mild form of cerebral palsy and wore braces on his feet, but that didn't deter his energy, Jenny Horn said. The family has created a massive poster of pictures remembering Charlie, who already knew his colors and ABCs. Read more about the Horn Family>>
