Winter/Spring issue of 2006

Volume 16, Number 2

SUPERTWINS magazine

This issue is bursting at the seams with 80(!) pages of great articles, tips and tricks from families, the latest research, absolutely great pictures and so much more- all relating to families of higher order multiples.

It is our honor to introduce to you two new wonderful members of our Medical Advisory Board Lisa Nalven, MD who is the Medical Director of the Developmental Pediatrics department of Valley Center for Child Development in Ridgewood, NJ.  Dr. Nalven wrote a wonderful article in our last issue on What is a Developmental Pediatrician.  We are so very fortunate to have her dedication and support on our board.

In this issue our other new member of the Medical Advisory board, Elizabeth A. Pector, MD Family Physician and Practice President of Spectrum Family Medicine in Naperville, IL has written a fantastic article giving our readers a glimpse at Adolescence: Multiple Madness?

As a mom of teenage triplets I personally found this article to be exceptionally insightful.

In our Grandparent Pearls column, Shelley Miller tells us about Knowing Where to Turn: My Parents and Carlene Bonar shares with us her Road to Joy: A Grandma’s Perspective.

Find out how our Holiday Adopt a Family program did this year in bringing the holidays to close to 200 children and what these families have to say.  Hear also how other programs benefiting families touched by last year’s hurricanes are supported by Friends of MOST.

Come along as Suzanne Spradley and Rob & Sharon Hickson share with us their family’s That was then- This is now reflections on parenting after the NICU.

Two exceptional big sisters from TX are in this quarter’s Sibling Spotlight:

Mel Shokler a US Middle School Chess Champion: a very special big sister.

Kelcie Yannessa writes how her life and her relationship with her Mom changed forever once she found out what the big secret in her house was.

Do you have a busy month ahead? Find out how one mom manages 6 birthdays in the same month: not all that unusual when you family may be a bit Larger Than MOST.

In our Special Family Column this Quarter: Peggy Fitzgerald shares with our readers the story of her identical triplet daughters and their journey as they travel into and put down roots in the deaf community when learning that one of their little girls is profoundly hearing impaired. Debbie Hopson helps us understand Parenting Quadruplets, Autism and ABA Therapy.

In the beginning- there was Hyperemesis! Natalie Kleiber, RN and mom of triplets helps expectant parents understand Hyperemesis by sharing her experience, knowledge and pointing us in the right direction for additional support and resources.

It is still RSV Season and Christina LaQuay writes us about her family’s RSV experiences: it is not the norm but it is normal to them. We hope that you will consider sharing your family’s experiences with RSV and suggestions for other in how to ideally decrease exposure and manage a houseful of pretty sick babies if your babies do develop complications from RSV.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Awareness and Prevention Mothers of Supertwins (MOST) has been a strong advocate of RSV awareness and prevention since the 1980's. By the time they are two years old, all babies will have had RSV, and - for most - it will appear as if they just have a cold. Babies who are born premature or have ongoing respiratory issues are at risk for complications associated with RSV such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis. Are you traveling this spring?  In our Toddler Times column this quarter is a MUST read for any family of toddlers thinking about air travel: Tips for Flying with Multiple Toddlers by Lora Sattler.  You may also want to check out our booklet for Parents of Multiples: Traveling With Multiples-Trains, Planes, Boats, and Automobiles with Special Disney Section

We are pleased to again in this issue have school psychologist Jennifer Jo Brout, PsyD answer our readers’ questions. In this issue she discusses Preemies entering school and What to do when competition becomes unhealthy in a sibling relationship. If you have a question you would like Dr. Brout to address in an upcoming issue of SUPERTWINS magazine please feel free to email me at Maureen@MOSTonline.org.

Our Woman to Woman column this quarter is exceptionally relevant

as we each deal with our own versions of Cabin Fever this winter.

Mikell Webb writes as a therapist and mother of triplets plus on When Mom Needs a Time-Out: SHE SHOULD TAKE IT! All of us have been to the end of our rope and just knowing what to do in order to hold on through that moment will make all of the difference.

Dorothy Dennelly shares with our readers her MOST Incredible Year: Finding Friendship through networking with other MOST members

Debbie Sweeney gives us tips on how moms Sleep in the Shower and our wonderful members share with us their imaginative and quite unique vanity license plates: IMTHEMOST:1N3N1 (and many more- email us what you have on your vanity license plate- we will not print your state).  One of my favorite topics in this issue is You Know you are a Mom of Triplets, Quads, Quints or MORE When.... We received some really insightful and quite funny entries this issues and I look forward to hearing from many more of our readers on this topic!

Robin Snyder shares her family’s very poignant story of Love, Fear, Loss, Survive- Thrive, Learning to Live: Defying the Odds- Life Looking Something like Normal as she takes us through her pregnancy, their NICU experience and the loss of three of her precious babies and how her two little survivors not only survive but thrive.  We would also like to welcome Robin to the MOST General Board. She has very graciously accepted the position of Asst. to the Chair of PreemieCare.  We are looking forward to our members and the members of Preemie Community getting to know Robin as she helps us build and network through our daughter organization PreemieCare.

In our Crafts Corner Janalee Orfanides points us in the right direction in starting art early with our multiples and some fun and easy crafts for the preschool crowd.

H Crafty Families Needed!

MOST is looking for families to try the crafts we publish in our magazine SUPERTWINS each quarter. If you think you would like to join our Crafty Families who help out with the arts and crafts projects in advance, we will need a few photos of your children doing the craft and their finished products to go along with the column.  We would also love for our Crafty Families to critique the crafts to let us know if you and your children enjoyed it, if you used any substitutions, or if you would recommend any other modifications.  To become a MOST Crafty Family H contact our Craft Corner column coordinatorH. Each SUPERTWINS Magazine has an in-depth Question and Answer section. The questions are posted in the previous Magazine and are broken down into Pregnancy/Infancy, Toddler, and School-Age categories.

Click on a button to the right to read and respond to the Questions using our On-line Form. Some of the responses will be published in the next issue of the Magazine.

If you have a question you would like asked, you may post it in one of MOST's Online Forums (HPregnancyH, HInfant/ToddlerH, or HSchool-AgeH) or e-mail it to the HMOST OfficeH and ask it to be included in the next Magazine.

We hope to hear from you!!

Want to support other HOM moms directly?  Become a MOST Area Coordinator.  Many of our AC's have worked hard supporting moms in their area but now their children are getting older and they would like to help MOST in other ways.  We have opportunities for AC's in many states.  This is a wonderful way to get to know other HOM moms and be there for others like someone was there for you!
