APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

As the mother of a child on the Autism Spectrum I know first hand how scary, at times overwhelming and how alone you can feel when your child receives this diagnosis. MOST has developed a parenting booklet for families of multiples that have one or more children who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). (Autism and the HOM Family)  You are far from alone and we are here to help support our families every step of the way. ASD is a group of developmental disabilities caused by unusual brain development that begin during childhood and last throughout a person's life. As many as 6 in every 1,000 children have at least one of the ASDs (this statistic is for ALL children not just multiples or preemies but any child). People with ASDs tend to have problems with social and communication skills, and have unusual ways of learning and reacting to different sensations. We also have a wonderful online email group/ forum MOST- Special Needs for any MOST family that has one or more children who were born very preterm or have ongoing medical or developmental challenges.  This group is a wonderful network of families who have really shared tremendous amounts of information, resources and advocacy skills. If your family has a child in need of this type of support I would strongly suggest you consider becoming a part of this network (there is no charge- it is included as part of your membership).

To supplement autism awareness efforts, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is a partner in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initiative, "Learn the Signs. Act Early," to educate health care professionals and parents about childhood development, including early warning signs of autism and other developmental disorders.

Autism Speaks, in partnership with the Academy and others, is releasing a series of public service announcements (PSA) about autism, including information about how common autism is as well as the importance of early detection. These ads will bring an increased focus on autism and may increase the number of parents asking questions about child development.

The MOST Caring Team- The Breast Cancer 3-Day Benefit

For almost 20 years now MOST has struggled, just as so many of our families and friends have, in supporting and caring for our members, relatives and friends who have been touched by the terrible effects of breast cancer.  Over the last two decades we have lost many close friends and members to this terrible disease.  Here on Long Island, where the national MOST office is based, the numbers are staggering. In 1990, the chance of developing breast cancer for a woman living on Long Island was one in nine. Today, it is one in eight; in parts of Suffolk County (where our office is), one in seven.  MOST has known too many brave women who have fought this dreaded disease.

After a New Year’s resolution made with a handful of other MOST members to walk and lose some weight and see the wonderful results, one of our members, Dorothy Dennelly, a mom of 6 year old quadruplets, decided to organize the MOST Caring Team and to take on the Breast Cancer 3-Day.  They will honor our MOST families who have known lives lost, celebrate our survivors, promote breast cancer research, and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it.  Breast Cancer 3-Days take place in twelve cities, and net proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  Dorothy does not have breast cancer but has come to fully appreciate how great you can feel when you are healthy and hope that through the research sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, she will never know how quickly health can fade after the diagnosis of breast cancer. Dorothy will be doing the 3-day walk covering 60 miles in Chicago Sept. 8-10th along with MOST members Kristie DeBlecourt and Lisa Jacobson. She would like to invite you to think about joining them. You can join them in the Chicago walk or join our MOST team and walk in the city nearest you. Please e-mail Dorothy at ddennelly@comcast.net. If you would like to be a part of this worthy cause or if you would like to support the MOST Caring Team click the link http://www.the3day.org/Chicago06/themostcaringteam. If you would like more information on the walk go to www.the3day.org . Lisa, Kristie and Dorothy are going to try and set up a Yahoo group to keep those interested up to date if you would like more information please feel free to email Dorothy. Thank you!
